Promoting Global Health Through Holistic Wellness

20 May 2024 · By Dr. Chiemelie Eze

The Embassy of Health and Wellness engagement in Abuja, 2024

What does it mean to be healthy? For too long, the answer has been framed negatively — health as the absence of disease. The Embassy of Health and Wellness argues for a richer answer: health as complete physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.

This is the case made in the Embassy's institutional concept note, prepared in connection with the World Health Assembly 2024 in Geneva. The note sets out four commitments that guide the organization's work:

A paradigm shift

Advocating for holistic wellness — not mere absence of disease — as the goal of health systems and health policy.

Collaboration

Fostering cooperation among governments, international organizations, academia, civil society, and the private sector to address complex health challenges collectively.

Empowerment

Recognising the agency of individuals and communities in their own health journeys, and equipping them with knowledge, resources, and skills.

Policy and practice

Engaging in research, policy analysis, and advocacy that support holistic approaches to health promotion and disease prevention.

The full concept note is available to read in our publications library.
